When you think of technology in the home, flooring is probably not the first thing you think of. Flooring is, well, flooring. It doesn’t have buttons or flashy lights. You can’t talk to it, and it won’t automatically adjust the temperature of your house based on your habits. But, that doesn’t mean technology hasn’t played an enormous role in the flooring products offered today. Each year, flooring gets better, stronger, softer and more durable. New materials and manufacturing technology are responsible for the wide variety of beautiful, durable floors available today. Here’s a look at some of the attributes you can now find in flooring – no matter what your style – thanks to technology.
WATERPROOF
Gone are the days of worrying that a missed spill could ruin your floors forever. You can now find both hard surface and soft surface flooring options that are waterproof. That means the product itself will not absorb or be damaged by water. Waterproof carpet resists water (and liquid stains) and won’t let those pesky spills seep through to the carpet pad and subfloor. This is a game-changer for households with pets. Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) products are made of a material that is completely waterproof and they are available in textures so realistic, you’ll hardly be able to tell it’s not hardwood or ceramic tile.
SUPER SOFT
If carpet is what you’re looking for, you probably love the feel of something soft underfoot. Whether you have kids playing on the floor, love to walk around barefoot or just want a soft place to sit during movie night, you’ll be pleased to hear that carpet is now softer than ever. With finer, smoother fibers, the finished product feels soft and silky to the touch. But soft doesn’t mean weak. These carpets are just as stain resistant and strong as their less soft counterparts.
DURABLE
From carpet to hardwood and everything in between, flooring today is ready to take what life has to throw at it. It’s not uncommon to see carpet with warranties of 15 years or more and hardwood with warranties over 25 years. This is all due to materials and finishes that truly stand the test of time. Scratch-resistant finishes on hardwood floors are great for standing up to pet scratches or those house guests who refuse to take their shoes off.
STAIN RESISTANT
Stains, especially on carpet, are a worry of most homeowners. With stain-resistant products, that worry can disappear. Even if you don’t have kids or pets in the home, spills and stains are bound to happen occasionally. Fibers that don’t absorb stains are easy to clean no matter how quickly you rush to rescue your carpet from a spill.
A family room is a space in your home where everyone in the household can gather to relax and spend some quality family time together. Creating a beautiful family room that is also welcoming and comfortable can often be a challenge. Don’t forget these 8 essentials when you’re creating your beautiful family room.
1. Plenty of Seating
Make sure there are enough comfortable seats for everyone in the family plus a few guests. If you don’t have a lot of space, try a sectional or keep some comfy floor pillows on hand so you can always welcome everyone in.
2. A Warm Glow
There’s nothing like gathering around the glow of a fire on a cool spring evening. Whether you already have a traditional wood burning fireplace or you opt for an electric or gas burning model.
3. Table Tops
A large coffee table is a must for family games. Keep the accessories light and easy to move so you can quickly clear space for a family gathering.
4. Soft Underfoot
Soft carpet or a soft area rug are a must have for a family room. When you’re ready to relax your toes will want a soft place to land. And a soft floor is more inviting for kids (and adults) who may want to sit on the floor.
5. Color
Pick a color that makes the entire family feel at ease – like this year’s trendy indigo blue. Think about how you want to feel in the space. Blues and greens can be relaxing but yellows and oranges can be fun and energizing.
6. Storage
Make sure there’s a place in your room to stash all the family activities – games, DVDs, books and magazines – so they’re out of sight when you’re not using them but readily available when it’s time to relax. Built in cabinets or tables with drawers are great options.
7. Out of Reach
Especially if you have little ones, keep breakable accessories out of reach. That doesn’t mean they need to be out of sight, though. Choose high shelves to display any breakable accents.
8. Plan for the TV
Instead of avoiding it or pretending it won’t be a part of your space, go ahead and plan a place for the television. A custom built in shelf or a piece of furniture specifically designed to hold a TV will help keep it from being an eye sore.
An exclusive Q&A with interior Kitchen designer Sara Bederman.
What were your clients’ needs for this space?
Our clients took on a very substantial renovation by adding a second story to the ranch style home. They also more than doubled the size of the home by adding a large addition to their home. With two young boys, we needed to plan a home that they could all grow in to over time. We planned amazing spaces in the home and then finished them with hard working, sensible and stylish finishes.
Were there any challenges designing this space?
The home has lower than average ceiling height so it was vital that we plan the interior with that in mind. As a result, we kept cabinetry lines more vertical to create a visual lift in the spaces. We also kept colors light and airy and made sure to add an abundance of recessed lighting to ensure the rooms were well washed with bright lighting.
What’s one unique element of the design that works well in this space?
Without a dedicated mud room in the home, the clients still wanted to capture the function of a personalized mud room storage concept. In response, we planned an amazing personal locker concept and placed it right in the front entry of their home. It is a beautiful design feature, complete with mirrored cabinet doors that open up to personal storage compartments. The mirrored doors add dimension to the otherwise narrow feeling space and the storage and organization provided by the cabinetry keeps the front hall free from clutter.
Do you have any special considerations or requirements when creating a kitchen?
I like to make sure that we plan the kitchen with far more storage and efficiency than our clients think they need. Once we are able to scale and plan the spaces, it is always amazing how much extra space is claimed when a kitchen is designed effectively. It is so exciting to go into our clients' homes a few months after they move in and still find kitchen cabinets that are empty! Empty cabinets are quite a luxury!
How does the flooring play into your design?
In this home, the client agreed to install hardwood throughout the main and second floor. All main spaces had hardwood flooring except the front entry which was a combination tile and stone design. The bedrooms were also finished with hardwood floor. As a result, they feel open and airy, clean and fresh. Area rugs are placed in each bedroom to subtly soften the spaces.
Why did you choose these colors?
The palette of this home includes soft and light warm neutrals. It is a peaceful palette that suited the transitional aesthetic preferred by our clients. The palette enhanced the original architecture of the home and lends itself to a lasting aesthetic that will not age or tire over time.
What is your favorite aspect of this room?
I love the large granite island in this kitchen. While I don’t specify granite frequently, it was the perfect finish for this family. The tones in the stone slab we sourced worked perfectly with their color palette, and the hard working nature of granite suited this busy family’s lifestyle perfectly.
What did your client like the most?
It is so hard to say. They seem to love it all! The home turned out better than their wildest dreams. They are very happy clients.
Bathroom flooring has to be different from the flooring used in living rooms, bedrooms and even that of the kitchen. There are various types of flooring that you can opt for when it comes to your living spaces and bedrooms but you cannot choose any and every flooring material as bathroom flooring. The flooring in your bathroom has to be robust, it should be able to withstand temperature extremes, wear and tear and most importantly, it should be able to withstand humidity and water. There are three challenges that your bathroom flooring faces which the flooring in other areas of your home doesn't have to brace up for - water, weather extremes and humidity. Owing to these challenges, there are several attributes that your bathroom flooring material should possess.First, you should think of the various types of flooring that you can choose from. You have tiles, wooden flooring, natural flooring options like bamboo or cork, laminates or vinyl and natural stones like granite, marble or slate among others.Wood, bamboo, cork, laminates or vinyl are not the ideal flooring choices for your bathroom. There are specific reasons for that. First, none of these flooring options are hard enough, barring hardwood. All these flooring materials are very susceptible to damage owing to moisture. You cannot possibly expect your bathroom flooring to be a porous material or one that is prone to damage due to water. Such materials will not only get damaged quickly but they would cause foundational damage to your home and will be a threat to you and your family. The threat can be understood easily. Cork and bamboo can retain moisture and they can become thriving grounds for bacteria and other microorganisms. Laminates can turn slippery when there is water and you need anti-skid flooring for your bathrooms, which is a basic requirement. Wood reacts to temperature extremes, cannot prevent itself from water damage and vinyl is just not a very organic or desirable flooring option.Natural stones like granite or marble and tiles such as ceramic tiles are the best flooring that can withstand bathroom wear and tear. Natural stones are nonporous and they are hard enough to take as much traffic as a bathroom is expected to sustain. Ceramic tiles are good bathroom flooring choices but the particular variety of ceramic tiles, known as porcelain tiles, are an even better alternative. Ceramic tiles or porcelain tiles can come with anti-skid features and that should also be given equal significance for your safety.

Hard wood floors are a great way to add warmth, charm and elegance to your home's decor. Unfortunately hard wood floors are difficult to install, they are difficult to care for and they are difficult to afford. If you would like to add the beauty hard wood to your home without having to pay hardwood prices then you should consider laminate flooring products offered by companies like Pergo. When you compare laminate vs. hardwood you can see that laminate flooring has a lot of benefits that hardwood floors don't have. First laminate floors offer you easy installation options. In many cases you don't even need to glue your panels together. All you have to do is snap the panels together and your floor is done. The second benefit of laminate flooring is that it is a cheap alternative to hardwood and carpet. Finally laminate flooring is more versatile and durable than hardwood floors. Unlike wood floors it can be installed just about anywhere, including bathrooms. To clean your laminate flooring all you have to do is sweep it or wipe it down with a damp cloth. While there are a lot of reasons why a person would want to install laminate flooring in their homes there are also a few reasons why they wouldn't want to use laminate flooring. If you are not good with DIY projects then installing a laminate floor may be too much for you to handle. Price can also make laminate flooring out of the reach of some homeowners. While you can find laminate flooring for under $1.00 per square foot, some of the higher end planks can be almost as expensive as hardwood planks. Finally, if you are trying to sell your home in an expensive neighborhood then laminate flooring may be seen as an inappropriate building material to use even though it is more durable than hardwood.

Your kitchen is one the most used rooms in your house and there are many reasons to do a kitchen remodel. It could be to update appliances or to purchase smaller ones, or expand the kitchen, especially if it is a smaller kitchen. When doing a small kitchen remodel make sure that you make it a pleasant place to spend time, is functional, and user friendly. Make a list of what you want to do after setting a budget. When doing a small kitchen remodel the first thing that you need to do is set a budget because this is a project that can become expensive. You want to make sure that you do not run out of money part way through the project. If your budget allows it you can do a complete kitchen remodel that includes replacing the countertops, cabinets, floors, and buy new appliances. This can also involve hiring a remodeling contractor because with complete renovations you will want to make sure that everything is done according to the local building codes. Many people cannot afford this large of an expense so they do small things. One important thing to do when doing a small kitchen remodel is to maximize the space. Use items that are functional and decorative. One example would be a pot rack that can be mounted on the ceiling. By installing this it can free up cabinet space and counter space. It can also add visual interest to the area. The same purpose can be accomplished by mounting hooks under the cabinets for holding coffee mugs. Utilizing the space under the cabinets can be a great place to hang items so you can free up counter space. To increase usable space you could trade in a large kitchen table for a smaller table, remove a large center island, or add built-in shelves. Use brightly colored curtains when choosing ones to decorate your windows. Do not overload your walls with a lot of decorative items as this will make the room look smaller. Two simple ways to begin your small kitchen remodel is to change the cabinet hardware or repainting the kitchen. You can also paint or stain your kitchen cabinets. When painting the walls keep to light colors to give the illusion of more space. Also allow as much natural light as you can into the room. If you decide to retile the floor use larger tiles to also give a larger space illusion. You can also replace some of the appliances in the kitchen such as you could trade in your large refrigerator if you no longer need a large one with a smaller one. To gain more counter space when replacing your counter top replace your larger sink for a smaller one.

Marble floor tiles are generally the choice for homeowners who want an elegant, glossy add-on to their home flooring requirements. Marble floor tiles are certainly not a cheap option for homeowners, and they do have a long way to go before they become as common as wood parquet or vinyl floor tiles. However, one good reason for utilizing marble in exterior or interior home use is that marble has the best all round value for money, design, durability and enduring style, according to interior designers, engineers and home decorators. This type of stone has been a staple for good quality construction and design, and used on opulent homes, front porches and court yards for centuries.Marble tiles are not just being used on the floors though. Some have installed beautiful cast-iron fireplaces which have a classic style marble mantle, The contrast between the rustic design and nature of a house and the old-world allure of marble floor tiles gives a distinctively elegant feel to it, and adds up to relaxing, formal feel to any home.Marble floor tiles are not only considered appealing to the senses, but they also have general health benefits. The dense surface of the marble tile does not have pores that allow allergy-inducing irritants to gain a foothold, in contrast with some types of wood, rugs and carpets.Marble floor tiles are considered easy to clean, they can be quickly washed with a single sweep of a mop. Because of this, marble floors make for a perfect quality flooring both indoor or outdoor and requires basically little maintenance, and still does not fail to show off a constant, natural sheen.Marble tile surfaces could also be easily treated with disinfectants that work best on hard surfaces. Interior design consultants find it better having sanitary marble floor tiles as opposed to wood flooring in kitchens and bathroom areas. Marble tiles are also advisable fort use in entry ways, since this areas are often filled with dirt and germs as people come and go.It is unwise to think that marble tiles could just be used indoors. These types could be considered ideal patio coverings and for use in front-porch stoops. One can permanently match the marble tile to precast concrete walking pads to create wonderfully crafted garden stepping stones. However, should one decide to use marbles floor tiles outdoors, it is advisable for one to check if these tiles meet standard slip-resistance requirements, since exterior tiles have surface textures that allow them to be slip- resistant.Reputable tile providers often produce special outdoor tiles that have a slightly gritty, semi-coarse surfaces, even though the tile is glazed. The invisible grit surface provides excellent traction when the tile becomes wet. In order to be used outdoors, the marble tile must be frost-proof and unglazed for floor use, and the moisture absorption rate should be around 0.5% or less.It is advisable that slip-resistant tiles be used outside in areas exposed to the elements such as heat, moist and rain, or around swimming pools. Exterior tiles are generally rated to indicate their particular slip-resistance modes. It would be prudent to keep in mind that there would always be a trade-off between slip resistance and maintenance and cleaning, since slip-resistant tiles will accumulate more dirt and will generally need more caring and constant upkeep.Marble Tile - http://tilenet.net

Polished concrete floors, long consigned to finished basements and commercial spaces, are making well-deserved inroads into residential homes. Recent advances in the ability to seal and stain concrete have raised its aesthetic appeal, allowing it to compete with other stone flooring such as marble, granite and slate--at a fraction of the cost. Polished concrete flooring offers a slew of benefits to home builders and renovators. Below are several of the pros to building your new home with flooring of polished concrete or exposing the concrete floor of your existing home.Polished floors are sustainableThose most interested in building environmentally sustainable homes have been among the first to embrace polished concrete floors, and with good reason. Sealed concrete has an extremely low environmental impact. If your home, like most, is built upon an existing concrete slab, simply sanding and sealing the concrete eliminates the need for additional environmentally costly flooring materials. In addition, the compounds used to sand and finish a concrete floor are extremely low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which pollute the environment and decrease indoor air quality, which can have adverse health effects. The compounds used to seal concrete floors have no lasting odour.Treated concrete offers great valueIn addition to making polished concrete incredibly sustainable, concrete has long been the least expensive flooring option available. The fact is: concrete comes pre-installed in most homes, because most houses are built on concrete slabs. The later additions of timber, vinyl, carpeting or tile are simply laid over it. For this reason, concrete comes second only to bare earth in terms of initial outlay. In addition, polished concrete's reflective surface can help reduce the cost of interior lighting. It remains cool in the summer, reducing household cooling costs as well.Polished concrete is easy to maintainMost traditional flooring have rigorous cleaning requirements. Carpeting must be vacuumed. Floor boards need to be waxed. Marble floors can require special cleaners and are prone to scuffs, which require special attention.By contrast, a polished concrete floor, which is highly resistant to scuffs and stains, can be simply mopped when necessary. This can end up saving you hours in labour and cleaning costs.Concrete for floors is extremely durableTreated concrete floors are some of the world's most durable. According to houzz.com, a properly treated concrete floor can be expected to last for more than 100 years. This has been long-known by commercial interests, who often utilize this flooring option in showrooms, retail locations and other high traffic areas. Concrete allows the floor to "breathe," as such, it is not susceptible to moisture and rot issues in the manner of tile or vinyl floors, which can trap moisture between themselves and the slab below, resulting in costly replacements.Sealed concrete offers health benefitsSince the 1960's household dust and dust mites have been known to exacerbate (if not cause) allergies, and are particularly problematic for those with existing respiratory issues. Carpeting, with its long fibres, as well as tile and floorboards, with their grout lines and grooves, are known to harbour bacteria, germs and mildew. Polished concrete is seamless, leaving no place for dust mites to gather and expose the bacteria that can be trapped between tiles and floorboards. Polished concrete flooring can be the first step toward creating an allergy-free environment.Concrete is very versatileHomeowners have a host of options where treatments and stains are concerned. For homeowners who wish to eschew the "wet" look often associated with polished concrete, there are silicon-based penetrating sealers. For homeowners who were considering salvaged wooden planks, concrete can be stamped to mimic them. It can be made to resemble slate tiles.Concrete can be stained to achieve a marble-like effect or to nearly any colour imaginable. It can be ground before treatment to the desired level of aggregate exposure. Aggregate is the materials mixed with cement to create concrete, when exposed, they create a textured look. In short, a polished concrete floor can be made to look truly unique.Concrete comes pre-installed in virtually every home. Properly sealed and polished, it is one of the most environmentally sustainable flooring options available--and one of the most versatile. Additionally, it is one of the most durable and perhaps the least expensive materials. In short, sealed concrete flooring offers a host of advantages over other floors. It is no wonder that the advantages of concrete flooring are being increasingly recognized by savvy home builders and renovators.

Whether you're building a brand-new home or are interested in hiring a remodeling contractor to give your current home a new look, it is important to make informed decisions about the type of products you choose. After all, these materials will be incorporated into your daily existence for as long as they are present in your home. Therefore, it is essential to be sure that you are going to be able and willing to commit to all of the demands that correspond with your particular choice. The correct flooring installation should not only add personalized beauty to your home--you must also choose a style that best matches your daily needs, habits, and lifestyle. When you're trying to decide which type of flooring is best for your family and your home, consider the following key points:Location
It's not particularly wise to install carpet in a kitchen or wood flooring in a bathroom. The same logic applies elsewhere in the home. While you might have a great idea in mind for a tile flooring design in your living room, stop to think about the practicality of placing that material in the location in question. Will anyone want to curl up with a bowl of popcorn and watch a movie on a hard tile floor? Likely not. Sure, wood flooring might look nice just as you come in through the front door, but then you'll be faced with the dings and scratches that will inevitably result from frequent foot traffic from the outdoors. It is important not to get caught up in how pretty your flooring choice looks in the sample book but think about how practical this choice will be when actually installed in your home instead.Looks
When it comes to choosing a flooring style, your options are practically limitless. Tiles can be arranged in myriad designs. Wood flooring is versatile enough to create a classic upscale atmosphere, a rustic ranch vibe, and everything in between. Carpets come in all colors and textures. To be sure that you're fully informed about what's out there before you commit to a purchase, consult a flooring contractor--or two--to see samples of their work. This not only lets you decide who to use for your installation project but also gives you a broader sense of your options. It may also be a good idea to look at home decor publications. When you know what you're looking for, you can be sure to select the choice that best matches your tastes and your current home furnishings.Costs
There are two aspects of cost when it comes to flooring: the initial purchase and installation cost, and the potential costs of future repairs and upkeep. It's simply a fact that certain materials, such as hardwood and tile, are more expensive to obtain than other options and will require more time, skill, and effort for your flooring contractor to install. Things get even more confusing when you break down your options into sub-categories: some woods cost more than others, as do different types of tile material. Luckily, if you're afraid of spending too much money, you have options. If you're looking for the sleek appearance of a wood floor but just can't swing the cost of this option, perhaps wood laminate flooring would be a less expensive substitute. The second aspect of cost, ongoing maintenance, is also important if you want your floors to maintain the same form and function in 10 years as they had on the day you first walked on them. Hardwood refinishing and repair, tile resetting and replacement, and carpet spot-dyeing and stretching all fall into this wide category. The exact cost will vary depending on the size and nature of the job, the floor contractor you choose, and other factors. The overall longevity and aesthetic preservation of your floors also depends on your commitment to daily care, so also stop to consider if you're willing to sweep, polish, or vacuum regularly, and factor that into your decision. Some materials require diligent care, while others are stronger and more durable.Health
Health is not something that many people think about when considering flooring, but the fact is that carpets can actually trap allergens such as dust and pollen. Unless you're willing to stay on top of your vacuuming and routine carpet cleaning, these health hazards can build up over time. This means that although the carpets may appear clean, they are actually sending up an invisible puff of impurities that can exacerbate allergies and asthma with every step. Flooring types that are easier to maintain generally can be cleaned with the stroke of a broom and do not harbor any hidden threats. The perfect flooring choice is different for everyone. Some families prefer carpeting for its welcoming feel and kid-friendly qualities. Some are willing to put a lot of work into maintaining their floor's appearance and promoting its longevity, while others are looking for pure functionality. If you're in the market for a new floor and want to select a type that will fulfill all your requirements and provide the strength to last for years to come, consider the factors above. You'll find that when you take your overall needs into account before you make a selection, you'll come out with a flooring installation that will best match your lifestyle.

Having hard flooring installed in your home can increase the value of your home, it can make keeping your home clean easier, and it can make your home prettier. If you get hard flooring installed by the wrong installation company you could have a nightmare of issues on your hands. Having the right company install your hard flooring is critical to the outcome of the project.Hiring a professional installation crew to install your new flooring components is a good idea. Many people try to do their own flooring installation, and quickly learn that they have taken on a project that requires tools they do not have, or skills they do not have. Unless you are certain about what tools you will need, and what skills you will need, then you need to look for professional installation companies to do the work for you.Installing laminate flooring is not the same as installing traditional hardwood floor boards. Installing laminate flooring takes different tools, and a different skill set. If you are hiring a flooring contractor to install your floor make sure they are experienced in installing the type of flooring you are buying. You want to get bids on your flooring installation from several different companies. You want no less than three bids on the work. The bid for the lowest amount is not always the best one to choose. The person that bid the lowest amount might have less experience than the people who bid more. Before you accept a bid on the work you should check out the company. See how much experience they have, and check with the Better Business Bureau and the local Chamber of Commerce to see if any complaints have ever been filed against them. When you talk to the flooring company about installing your floors for you they should want to send a representative to your home before they quote you a price. If the company quotes you a price before they see the job location, or the materials that they will be working with, they will often change the price after they get started. Professional contractors come to see the job before they quote the price. If the flooring representative suggests that you pay them up front then hunt another company. It is customary for a company to ask for a percentage of the job price up front, if they are supplying materials and labor. If they are just doing the labor do not pay until the job is done to your satisfaction, and always pay the company with a check so you have proof of your payment.Ask at the local flooring supply store for names of reputable flooring contractors in the area. The installers buy their materials from these supply stores and the stores know which installers work the most with different materials, and which ones pay their bills on time. The way a company handles their creditors says a lot about their character.

Invented in the mid-nineteenth century, linoleum has a long history of popularity. Made from all natural, biodegradable materials that can be recycled, such as linseed oil, wood or cork powder, and ground limestone. This earth-friendly flooring option has experienced a recent resurgence in sales as consumers have become more concerned with sustainability. Linoleum flooring can last for decades and, upon removal, is still biodegradable and toxin-free.Linoleum is known for its vivid colors and marbled patterns, but it is available in a variety of other styles as well, including geometric patterns and subtle earth tones. One of the unique qualities of linoleum is the fact that the color is consistent all the way through the material up to the cloth backing. Because of this, if the linoleum is scratched or scuffed, the damage will be nearly imperceptible, as the color and pattern will not change. Linoleum's durability makes it a great choice for high traffic areas, or homes with small children or pets.Because it is resistant to moisture, linoleum is a good flooring choice for kitchens and bathrooms in the home, or hospitals, where sanitation is critical. It is also considered to be a non-allergenic floor covering, and is often used in non-allergenic homes and medical centers.Another benefit of linoleum is the fact that it is easy to clean and maintain. Regular sweeping and damp mopping will keep your floors looking great without the use of harsh chemicals, and spills can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth. If you are looking for an attractive, environmentally friendly floor covering that will look great in any home, consider linoleum. It is perfect for both retro and contemporary settings, comfortable underfoot and easy to maintain. Contact a flooring specialist today to learn more about linoleum.

Vinyl is probably the world's most versatile plastic material. It is a type of plastic that comes from combining ethylene (found in crude oil) and chlorine (found in salt). When combined together these substances become Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) resin, or as it is better known - Vinyl. It is then further processed to be made more flexible, rigid, semi-liquid, clear or colourful, thick or thin.Vinyl was first invented in 1920 by scientists who wanted to develop a material that would help to manufacture everyday products that were easier to make, more durable, and cheaper than what was available. Today, vinyl has become the second largest manufactured and sold plastic resin in the entire world.Although the most common use of vinyl is that in construction (e.g. vinyl flooring) there are hundreds of other applications particularly in the sign industry where vinyl products include vinyl stickers, vinyl graphics, banners, vehicle graphics and floor stickers.Vinyl is a very strong and durable plastic material that can be manufactured in a variety of colours and properties. It is resistant to moisture and humidity. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different vinyls that a sign-maker can choose from. Choosing the right one for the job is essential as this will improve the finished quality of the application and increase productivity. Although the choice of vinyls can sometimes be overwhelming, all vinyls basically fall within 3 categories: monomeric calendered vinyl, polymeric calendered vinyl and cast vinyl.Monomeric Calendered Vinyl
Monomeric vinyl film generally has a bond life of between 1 and 3 years and it the least expensive of the vinyls.Because of it's limited duration these films are not suitable for demanding exterior applications such as vehicle graphics or fascia signage. This is because the vinyl is not stabilised like its polymeric and cast cousins. The vinyl will degrade in a variety of ways. It will shrink, peel, curl up at the edges and eventually flake off like old paint. You see this degradation often when inspecting vehicle graphics that has been applied using a wrong (monomeric) vinyl. Around the edges of the vinyl you will see a dirty black outline. This is where the face of the vinyl has shrunk, leaving an adhesive rim. This rim then attracts dirt and grime and eventually becomes an ugly black outline.Typical uses of monomeric vinyls include stickers for short-term use, short-term exhibition graphics, and window stickers for short term use (1 to 3 years).Polymeric Calendered Vinyl
Polymeric vinyls are often a happy medium between the unstable monomeric vinyl films and the expensive cast films. They are often reasonably priced (only a fraction more expensive than monomerics) and can offer durability and bond-life up to 5-6 years.Polymeric vinyls have added polymers to reduce shrinkage. Manufacturers are improving their polymeric vinyls all the time and the lifespan of these vinyls are on the upward trend. However, although these vinyls have improved significantly over time, they still fall short of the stability and durability of cast films. More on cast films later.Compared with monomeric vinyls, polymeric films last longer, are more stable and are much more suited to exterior applications. However, they don't do so well over irregularities such as rivets and corrugated surfaces. For flat surfaces polymerics are fine, but for anything other than a flat surface a cast is much more desirable.Polymerics are, therefore, suited for long-term window decals, flat panels for vehicle graphics, quality stickers, fascias, safety signage, general exterior vinyl graphics.CastVinyl
Cast vinyl films are the most expensive vinyl. However, for reasons below the cost is a price worth paying. They often will improve the quality of the job and enhance productivity, factors which will, in the long run, bring repeat business. Since labour cost will always be a sign-maker's greatest cost anyway, choosing the right material for the job should not merely be a question of cost anyway.Whereas monomeric (and to a lesser extent, polymeric) vinyls start life as a dough and want to return to their 'dough-like' state, a cast film begins life in a liquid form. During the production process this liquid is then spread out to an extremely thin layer. They have no 'memory' like calendered vinyls (i.e. they do not want to return to any pre-life form or shape) and can, therefore, take on new shapes, being mouldered by the sign maker. They are also ultra-stable with shrinkage being undetectable to the naked eye. This makes cast vinyls premium grade films.Because cast vinyls are thinner, they are easier to cut, weed, mould, wrap and apply. Apply a calendered film over a rivet and they will eventually 'fail' and return to their flat position. Apply a cast film and it will take the rivet shape and adapt it as it's new form.As such, cast vinyls are the recommended option for the majority of external applications. They are essential for vehicle wraps and vehicle graphics where the vinyl is required to go in and out of panels. Casts are also sometimes chosen for interior applications where a certain colour is required since there colour swatches available for cast vinyls are extensive.
